Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)
CWD is a progressive brain and nervous system disease found in deer and elk. The disease ultimately results in the death of the infected animal.
The State of Virginia has Carcass Importation Restrictions. This regulation prohibits persons from importing or possessing any whole carcass or certain parts of a carcass of any member of the family Cervidae(deer Family) including but not limited to, White-tail deer, Black-tail deer, Mule deer, Fallow deer, Axis deer, and Sika deer, Elk, Moose, and Caribou, originating from a state or Canadian province in which CWD has been found in free-ranging or captive cervids. This prohibition took effect on November 1, 2005.
There are 7 exceptions to the regulation.
1. boned-out meat that is cut and wrapped.
2. quarters or other portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or skull attached.
3. hides or capes with no skull attached.
4. clean skull plates with antlers attached.
5. clean antlers.
6. upper canine teeth.
7. finished taxidermy products.
States and Provinces. Alberta, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
